What is mesothelioma?
There are two main types of malignant (malign, deadly) mesothelioma: pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. There are also benign mesothelioma.
What is Benign Mesothelioma?
More recently referred to as a “solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura,” benign mesothelioma – as the name indicates – is usually not cancerous, though cancerous forms can occur from time to time.
Appearing more in men than women, these tumors usually start in the tissues under the mesothelium, which is known as the sub mesothelium. A similar tumor may grow in the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen. Doctors have appropriately named that disease “solitary fibrous tumor of the peritoneum.”

Pleural mesothelioma not always mean bad news because in this case the tumor could be benign and cure is possible. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a build up of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever.
